Diversity Laws
By: Sara Muenz
"Affirmative action refers to policies and procedures designed to combat on-going job discrimination in the workplace"(Reskin 5).
Affirmative action laws and anti-discrimination help keep atni-discrimination from happening and help to provide a more diverse workplace. When the workplace is more diverse there is a higher productivity level. Many businesses already have these laws in place which causes more diverse individuals to be hired creating a workplace that is more productive.
Causes
"America is more racially diverse than ever. Under the law, all workers look alike, regardless of skin color or ethnicity. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color or national origin by private employer, state or local goverment or educational institution with 15 or more employees for 20 or more weeks a year" (EEOC 1). The causes of anti-discrimination laws and affirmative action laws were because individuals were not being hired. In a country that use to cater to males in the work place laws had to be put into place in order to break this giring barrier. When most people think of CEOs and leaders of a company they don't picture women. With these laws in place that will hopefully break that stereotype.
Short Term Effects
“Allowed public employers to use carefully constructed
affirmative action plans to remedy specific past discrimination that resulted in
women and minorities being under-represented in the workplace (Johnson v.
Transportation Agency, Santa Clara County)” (Clark 2). The short term effects of
anti-discrimination laws were that more women and minorities that were just as
qualified were being hired. This would create a more diverse workplace. In that
with many different kinds of people many different thoughts and ideas would be
produced to help move the company forward.

Long Term Effects
“41percent of CEOs surveyed in 1995 said affirmative action
improved corporate productivity” (Crosby and Herzberger 1996, p. 86). With the
increase in diversity in the workplace you will see an increase in
productivity. This is due to different personalities and races and genders.
With the different types of people they all bring different traits to the table.
They also bring in different ideas because they all think differently. With all
of these factors productivity will go up.

Recommendations
Affirmative action laws are in place to help increase diversity in the workplace. There is a concern though that unqualified individuals will be hired just because they are fitting a quota. Businesses have to remember that they need to hire the most qualified person for the job. You can't force diversity either. If you do that you many make the owrkplace uncomfortable because the employee may feel they are only there because the company had to hire them. If you
